Pat O’Brien’s

By Tess

Much of the reason for researching the Myrtles Plantation yesterday was getting ready for the visit of great friends from France. They just received a tour guide book and are starting to pour over it and get excited.

So today we were IMing and she asked me to explain this Hurricane-thing.

How do you explain the complete excess of this beverage? Well, I suppose the recipe is a good place to start:

New Orleans Hurricane

Makes 6 cups

Or, simply buy Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane Mix, where all you have to add is 1 kind of rum, and can be served virgin.

  • 1 ¾ cups light rum
  • 1 ¼ cups dark rum
  • 1 ½ cups fresh orange juice
  • ½ cup cranberry juice
  • ½ cup sour mix
  • 2 tbsp grenadine
Served in Hurricane Glasses

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and serve over ice, or to dilute a bit, add to a blender with the ice for a frozen version.

If you’re in town and don’t want to go to all that trouble, you can simply head down to Pat O’s and get yourself the signature drink. It’s a lot easier, there’s no cleanup, and you can stare into their amazing fountains while your head slowly (or not so slowly) goes fuzzy.

The “great” (thanks!) French friends are so excited they don’t think they’ll be able to work until they get there with you ! What did you do to us ??? And how on Earth will we resist trying the recipe beforehand. You’re lucky I haven’t the slightest idea of what a “sour mix” is…

Sour mix is an easy one to get around…and the homemade stuff is much better than the store bought bottled anyway.

Equal parts of:
Water
Fine sugar
Lime juice
Lemon juice

Mix ‘em in a bottle and refrigerate for a bit to let everything come together.
