Streetcars on St. Charles!

By Tess

Headed back from a supplier’s warehouse this morning I crossed over St. Charles, and what did my wondering eyes see there but a streetcar!

A proper, green, ancient, clanking, wonderful streetcar!

Ours have been down since Katrina, though the Mid-City and Riverfront lines have opened over time. The St. Charles line will reopen on Saturday (through not all the way to the end of the line).

There will be things to relearn, like remembering to look before crossing the neutral ground (AKA the median)- having seen my share of streetcar v. auto accidents, I can tell you there’s no question which vehicle’s going to win that fight.

Still, I got teary. I hadn’t realized how much I missed that racket they make, and clearly I’m not the only one. Cars were honking and waving as they passed, the conductor clanging his little bell in return greeting…

One more sign of normalcy. We’ll take it.
