Parrot Playtime

By Tess

Well, hopefully, anyway.

We were cutting the ginger back a few days ago (it’s among the many things in the garden with intentions of world domination) when we realized that it won’t be too long before our parroty view is gone, blocked by a giant weed that’s growing in our neighbor’s yard.

So what did we do? Why, spend some cash, of course! We put up a parrot welcome area atop our wall, hopefully in such a way that the cats will not be able to access it. It’s a little rococo, but if the cats get too interested (and if the parrots ever show up, of course), I guess they’ll quickly discover that footlong parrots are a little tougher than the fat chicadees they pick off with regularity.

So here we have a parrot-friendly feeder, food, fruit snacks, banana flavored scratcher-thing and a few toys:

I have to say that those birds have some damn cool toys! The most interesting was like the toy we all had growing up- a ball with shapes cut out, and blocks to match the shapes. Can they really learn to fit the pieces in? Impressive- there are days I’m not sure my hand/eye (claw, whatever) co-ordination would be that good!

And… while I was looking at all this stuff, a parrot was being flirty. “Hey,” he thought, “this is a good sugar mama right here- she’s more excited by all these toys than I am- she’ll buy me every damn one!” But no, I held my ground- no bird purchase.

For now.
