St. Patrick’s Day ’07

By Tess

St. Paddy’s is a really big deal here in the city; plus we live in a neighborhood called the Irish Channel- I mean, c’mon- it’s a gimme, right?

So of course we have a big parade, which is similar to Mardi Gras parades in theory, with two big differences.

The first is that before the floats come the marching Krewes- and Charlie was asked to join one this year, so for the first time he was one of the beer-swilling, girl-kissing guys participating in the marathon that is the day- and he did admirably.

The second is that while they do throw beads (mostly green & white, naturally), they also throw carrots, potatoes- and whole, uncooked cabbages! This can present a problem if you’ve had a little too much green beer and you’re not paying close attention- those things are hard n’ heavy. It’s amazing to watch first timers when they see those bowling balls start hurling over the side!
